The Baltimore Orioles open their 2025 season on March 27 against the Toronto Blue Jays, and the American League team is concerned about the availability of All-Star shortstop Gunnar Henderson.
The former Morgan Academy standout hasn’t played for the Orioles since he left their Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays on Feb. 27 after experiencing right side discomfort.
On Wednesday, Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said Henderson had a right inercostal strain. An intercostal strain is an injury to the muscles between the ribs.
“I’m very, very hopeful,” Hyde said about the prospects of Henderson being able to start the season on time. “But we’re going to not push a strain there, and we want to make sure that he gets it taken care of. It’s one of those sensitive areas where we don’t want anything to reoccur.”
Alabama’s Mr. Baseball in 2019, Henderson finished fourth in the voting for the American League Most Valuable Player Award for the 2024 season. Henderson hit 37 home runs and had 118 runs and 92 RBIs in 2024, when he started at shortstop for the American League at the MLB All-Star Game.
In 2023, Henderson won the Jackie Robinson Award as the American League Rookie of the Year.
“He’s feeling a lot better,” Hyde said on Wednesday, “but we’re just going to obviously slow-play it a little bit and make sure that he is 100 percent. But he’s getting a lot better every single day.
